(SportsRadio 610) -- About 300 families from the Spring Branch school district were served food packages Friday with the help of star NFL running back Adrian Peterson, his wife Ashley and Astros infielder Alex Bregman.

Peterson's charitable foundation partnered with O Athletik, the distribution site on N. Shepherd, and received food from Brothers Produce and Frenchy's Chicken to provide for students.

"We wanted to give back to this community, so we were able to collaborate with the Spring Branch school district," Peterson said. "We're working with the Title I (low income) schools, because we know these kids and these parents, they really can use these items that we're able to help them out with. We came up with this a couple of weeks ago and started putting things into motion."

Ashley Peterson, CEO and founder of Elizabella Cosmetics, noted how students from low income schools often depend on the free meals provided by the school.

"COVID-19 has caused so much food insecurity," Ashley Peterson said. "We have so many families out of jobs and just in such great need. We really just wanted to team up and come together and do whatever we could for our community."

Kelly Clewis, a teacher at Spring Branch Middle School, said providing food to these families is a major help, especially as the school year ends.

"There are still needs that need to be met," Clewis said. "I know there's a lot going on in the world right now. We have crises coming from every direction right now. But our families still need help. Our schools still need help. So many of our families benefit from school lunches every day, school breakfast every day. Those opportunities don't always go year-round so the fact that we can provide some of this for our families and just give them that comfort, that fresh food can still come to their table and it's one less thing to be concerned about, it's remarkable."
