Astros Prospect homers in 2nd MLB at bat

HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610)- After hitting 23 home runs at AAA Round Rock, Yordan Alvarez went deep in just his second Major League at bat as the Astros beat the Baltimore Orioles 4-0 Sunday afternoon at Minute Maid Park.

Alvarez broke a scoreless tie in the fourth when he followed Yuli Gurriel's two-out single by crushing a 1-0 Dylan Bundy changeup 413 feet to the Phillips 66 pump in left centerfield. Alvarez flied out to left in his first and third at bats before walking in the eighth. He is the seventh Astro to homer in his Major League debut, the first since Derek Fisher in 2017.

The Astros added to the lead with an unearned in the sixth, and Gurriel's sacrifice fly in the eighth bumped the lead to four. They were held to five hits on the day, but what offense they got was plenty for a pitching staff headlined by Wade Miley.

Through six innings, Miley only allowed one man to reach second base, but ran into trouble in the seventh. The first three Orioles reached to start the inning, loading the bases and ending Miley's afternoon. Ryan Pressly replaced him and worked out of the jam thanks to a fielder's choice and a pair of fly outs to keep Baltimore off the scoreboard. After Hector Rondon worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning, Josh James walked two in the ninth, so A.J. Hinch turned to Roberto Osuna who got Rio Ruiz to ground out on a comebacker for his 17th save. Miley earned his sixth win.

Josh Reddick finished with two hits and an RBI as the Astros improve to 45-22 on the season.

Bundy was the hard luck loser for the Orioles, allowing three runs, two earned over six innings, but the Orioles drop to 20-45.

Following an off day Monday, the Astros will be back in action again Tuesday when they host the Milwaukee Brewers in the opening game of a 2-game series.
