Buffalo D Ranks Sixth in NFL

HOUSTON (SPORTSRADIO 610) – Buffalo comes into Houston on Sunday with one of the best defenses in the NFL in yards per game and a nose for takeaways.

They’re getting turnovers. Those guys are flying to the ball, playing very well, playing together. The chemistry looks real good and those guys are just trusting what the coaches are prepping them up for. They never quit. They’re always fighting to make the offense make a mistake and a lot of offenses do that, so we have to make sure that we contain that, focus on our job and do what we’ve got to do in this game plan,” Texans Quarterback Deshaun Watson told the media on Wednesday.

The numbers back it up.  Buffalo has forced 10 fumbles so far this season, which ranks as the best in the NFL.  The Bills have recovered six of them, which is the second most in the league.  In addition to all of the fumbles, Buffalo has also picked off three passes.

“They’re real good at getting the ball out. They create a lot of turnovers, so we’ve got to make sure that we take care of the ball,” Texans Wide Receiver Will Fuller added.

Lost in the amount of turnovers Buffalo causes, is also how stingy they’ve been defensively.  The Bills have given up just 313.8 yards per game, which is the sixth best in the league.

“Let’s start with the defensive line, I’ve been coaching against Kyle Williams for a long time. He’s one of the better inside tackles that we’ve ever coached against. He’s a heart and soul guy, does a great job, plays every snap 100 miles an hour. Jerry Hughes is having an unbelievable year, very explosive player off the edge,” Texans Head Coach Bill O’Brien said.  “Linebacker-wise, they’re doing a really good job – Lorenzo Alexander, the rookie out of Virginia Tech (Tremaine Edmunds), I mean they’re really – (Matt) Milano – they’re very active. And the secondary, Tre’Davious White, really good corner, the safeties, (Micah) Hyde and (Jordan) Poyer, really talented guys. So, it’s a big challenge for us. They’re playing really well. They’re doing a great job of taking the ball away, too. Sean (McDermott) does a great job of coaching that, and those guys are taking it to the field.”
