The Texans wrapped up their final practice at the Methodist Training Center Saturday morning before shifting to the next phase of training camp.

Next week the team will hold joint practices with the Green Bay Packers on Monday and Tuesday, before playing their first preseason game on Thursday, Aug. 8.

Texans head coach Bill O'Brien said there is a lot of benefits to holding the joint practices.

"We're looking forward to it, we have a chance to see how they do things, they have a chance to see how we do things and to look at the rosters on both teams, there's just a tone to get out of it".

The Texans will host a couple of joint practces of their own in a couple of weeks with the Detroit Lions Wednesday, Aug. 14 and Thursday, Aug. 15.

Saturday morning, the Texans ramped up competition as best they could against themselves with a mid practice goal line drill. It was best on best and the defense ended up making most of the plays. At one point, Whitney Mercilus emerged from the pack with the ball after recovering a fumble, something that Bill O'Brien said the offense clearly needs to work on.

"It was one of those days where I felt like, maybe this would get it going a little earlier, you get the energy going and it was good, defensively we did a good job. We gotta hold on to the ball, I think we fumbled the ball twice down there, two or three times really. It was good to get the energy going, but the execution wasn't great".

The next phase of training camp will really test the Texans both mentally and the physicality they want to play with.

Bill O'Brien is anticipating similar challenges this week as they've had in previous years being invlved with joint practices, "I think you have two really good professional teams that are gonna make sure we trying to compete...it's always been decent".

There have been a number of dust ups in recent years when teams across the leaue get together this time of year, the Texans have been involved in their fair share of altercations in those joint pratices as well, including some with the 49ers and the Redskins.

"Other than that, nothing big over the years so I think we'll be alright", O'Brien said.

Texans Training Camp Notes:

Bill O'Brien said the TE competition (Jordan Akins, Jordan Thomas, Darren Fells, Kahale Warring) is going to be a difficult one to figure out.

Who's impressing the coaches?

BOB said LB Whitney Mercilus has had a really good spring and camp thus far.

BOB also made mention of Jahleel Addae, the former Chargers Safety acquired by the Texans this Spring; said Addae has had a really good camp, is a hard worker and has stood out in the locker room.

How's the offensive line shaping up? Any idea of who is starting where?

BOB said, "The sooner the better, so they can all be out there communicating. I dont think we really know who those guys are yet, I think we have a decent idea, we have to play it practice to practice this time of year...we're not there yet. Hopefully we can kind of nail that down in the next couple of weeks, but we'll see".

Training Table:

Center Nick Martin, who is coming off a hamstring injury suffered early in camp will be making the trip to Green Bay with the team, but is not currently expected to practice.

Clowney Watch

BOB was asked if he'd been in regular communication with Clowney to this point and without going into any sort of detail, BOB did say "from my knowledge of what I know, he's working hard...we want him back, we need him here, but he'll come when he diecides what's best for him".
