Houston (SPORTSRADIO 610) - For the first time since May 4th in Arizona against the Diamondbacks, Gerrit Cole had a double-digit strikeout game. His six shutout innings would not factor into the decision Monday night at Minute Maid Park. The Astros lineup would come up with just five hits and have runners in scoring position only twice and lose to the A's by a final score of 2-0, ending their six-game win streak.

Cole allowed just three hits and struck out eleven while walking three more. He threw 108 pitches for the second consecutive outing and lowered his earned run average from 2.70 to 2.57. Through 19 starts in 2018, Gerrit now has 169 total strikeouts which is an Astros franchise record for most strikeouts prior to the All-Star break.

"It's kind of a fun stat, but the second half is equally, if not more important than the first. That's kind of when the big boys come out to play, so I'm looking forward to finishing this first half off," Cole said.

The bullpen gave way when Brad Peacock allowed a solo home run to Stephen Piscotty in the seventh inning. The A's would score one more in the eighth on a single also by Piscotty. Joe Smith allowed that run to come across though it was inherited from Will Harris.
