HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610) – Since the Rockets season ended two weeks ago the organization has parted of ways with three of head coach Mike D’Antoni’s assistant coaches.

Jeff Bzdelik, Roy Rogers and Mitch Vanya have all been let go by GM Daryl Morey. What makes this interesting is the fact D’Antoni is under contract to coach the Rockets next season after the team picked up his 2019-20 option last June.

D’Antoni has publicly made it known he wants to continue coaching and wants an extension, but earlier today he also made it clear that the decisions to fire his assistants wasn’t his call.

When asked about the firing of his assistant coaches D’Antoni told Mark Berman of Fox 26, “I thought Jeff (Bzdelik) and everybody under him did a great job. You’d have to ask (GM) Daryl Morey about the reasoning and all that behind it, but there are some great coach out there.”

I can confirm through multiple sources that the decision to pick up D’Antoni’s option next season was owner Tilman Fertitta’s, NOT Morey’s. It should also be noted that the decision to hire D’Antoni was former owner Les Alexander’s.

This story is interesting from all three perspectives.

From Morey’s perspective, he has to feel that an NBA executive with his pedigree should be able to hire the head coach to coach his team.

From D’Antoni’s he has to believe he has accomplished enough in the NBA to be able to hire his own staff.

And the most interesting perspective of all, Fertitta’s. He’s been successful in everything he has done and it will be interesting to see how involved he gets in the basketball decision-making moving forward.

Stay tuned because this could get very interesting.
