(SportsRadio 610) -- James Harden is teaming up with Kroger to provide groceries for 5,000 Houston-area families over the next eight weeks.

The Rockets star is supplying a weeks' worth of groceries to 600 families in response to the COVID-19 impact on Houston's most vulnerable communities, the team announced Wednesday.

People in Alief, Third Ward, Fifth Ward, southeast and northwest Houston will receive the donations distributed to several local food pantries.

Distributions start today and continue through Thursday, June 4.

Each participating food pantry will identify selected families to receive a combination of fresh meats, bread, milk, produce and staple canned goods from Kroger Houston.

The effort is in cooperation with the Houston Food Bank, which is also receiving heavy support from Astros stars Alex Bregman and Justin Verlander.

Earlier in the week, Harden's teammate Russell Westbrook donated laptops for Houston-area students to help with the newly-adapted digital learning environment.

Harden's contribution is made through his charity co-founded with his mother, Monja Willis, 3 The Harden Way Inc.

“We’re proud to be partnering with James Harden on this effort to help local families in need,” said Joe Kelley, Kroger Houston division president. “We know that many families are struggling to make ends meet and keep food on the table. It’s our responsibility to do something about it.”
