HOUSTON, TX (SPORTSRADIO 610) -   Lance McCullers Jr. will miss the 2019 season after it was announced today that he had Tommy John surgery to repair his ulnar collateral ligament on his right elbow.

Astros general manager and president of baseball operations Jeff Luhnow acknowledged McCullers' injured elbow earlier this week and said they would "..know more shortly."

After starting 22 games in the regular season, McCullers Jr. missed nearly all of August and September with what was called a "right forearm strain." He returned to pitch in relief on Sept. 26 and pitched a total of five innings in the 2018 postseason.

During his weekly segment with Mad Radio on SportsRadio 610, Lance McCullers Jr. said, "It may be a little while for me. I think what's important to understand about me as a person and a player is - I just turned 25 years old - I think my best days, especially in an Astros uniform are still ahead of me. Regardless of what happens to me, I think our team is in a good place for 2019 and I'll be ready to contribute when my time comes again."  Click here to listen to the full interview.

In the 2018 regular season, McCullers was 10-6 with a 3.86 ERA in 25 games and threw a career-high 128.1 innings.
