HOUSTON (SPORTSRADIO 610) – Whitney Mercilus is an integral part to the Texans’ defense. and Romeo Crennel wants to move Mercilus around the field to allow him to rush the passer more than he did a year ago.

“Whitney is one of those guys that, had 12 sacks a couple of years ago, is the ultimate team guy.  He’ll do whatever we ask him to do,” Crennel said.  “I think we’ll try to move him around a little bit more this year than last year and see what that does for him.”

Mercilus, who is entering the final year of his contract, recorded four sacks last year and one sack in an injury riddled 2017 season in which he only played five games.  The goal for Mercilus is for him to put up the sack numbers he had in 2015 and 2016 when he had 12 and 7.5 respectively.

“I’m all about it. Allow me to do what I do best, create havoc in the backfield and go disrupt quarterbacks,” Mercilus said Wednesday after practice.

A bounce back season for Mercilus would do wonders for the Texans, but the timing of it would be beneficial as well.  With Jadeveon Clowney’s hold out, Mercilus is getting more opportunities to show his past form and may be called upon to pick up some of Clowney’s production.

“Whitney's had a good camp. Whitney's been very active, his pass rush has been good, he's healthy, he feels good. He's had a good camp,” Texans Head Coach Bill O’Brien added.  “He's playing more off the edge of the defense, but he still plays at the second level sometimes. He's doing more of what he did two or three years ago, no doubt.”
