Postseason will now feature a straight single-elimination bracket

HOUSTON (SPORTSRADIO 610) – Major League Soccer announced a radical change to their playoff schedule on Monday that will feature four rounds of single-elimination play.

Seven teams will make the playoffs in each conference with the top seed receiving a first round bye in each league, and then the teams will play a bracket style tournament where one loss ends a team’s season.

Last season, six teams in each conference made the post season, with the top two teams receiving byes.  The other four teams would play in a single elimination knockout round.  The conference semi-finals and finals were both a two-match aggregate and then the MLS Cup Final was a single game.

The higher seed will receive home-field advantage in every game in the new look MLS Playoffs, and will fit between the October and November International windows.
