Top 5 Texans Off-Season Moves for Houston Texans

Sean Pendergast makes his list for Brian Gaine

HOUSTON (SPORTSRADIO 610) - The Houston Texans' season just ended on Saturday, but head coach Bill O'Brien, and general manager, Brian Gaine have already started looking ahead to the next season.

"I give Brian a lot of credit last year because I think that – I do know that this is a very strong rookie class that we have in here. A lot of these guys played a lot of snaps, got a lot of good experience. But, we didn’t start picking until the second day. So, I think that having some early round picks, as long as we work hard at it and we all see it through the same set of eyes, and obviously we make a pick of a guy that’s a talented guy that loves football, that is a great representative of the Houston Texans organization, then, yeah it’s good," said O'Brien in his press conference on Sunday. "It’s definitely good to have early picks.”

It feels different to look at the early mock drafts and imagine which player could be protecting Deshaun Watson's blind side next season because the Texans didn't have a first or second-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

"I don’t think you want to build it through free agency. That’s my personal belief. You want to build it through the draft so you can mold the guys. I don’t think you want to bring in a bunch of free agents," O'Brien said on Sunday. "These are decisions that we have to make, and these are decisions that we are going to be talking about daily.”

The Houston Texans have drafted well in the past, particularly the first-round during the Rick Smith era (with the exception of Kevin Johnson), drafting Duane Brown, Brian Cushing, Kareem Jackson, J.J. Watt, DeAndre Hopkins, Jadeveon Clowney, and Deshaun Watson. After the first round, it's been sparse.

That's what makes the last draft so striking. With no first or second round picks, Brian Gaine was able to add depth and talent to the Texans in the later rounds. What will Gaine do with a first and TWO second round picks?
