HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610)- Elston Turner will rejoin the Rockets coaching staff as Mike D'Antoni's lead assistant, the Houston Chronicle reported Thursday.

Listen to your team news NOW.

Turner, 60, was Rick Adelman's top assistant from 2007-2011, and interviwed to replace him before the team hired Kevin McHale. Since leaving the Rockets he's been an assistant with the Phoenix Suns, Memphis Grizzlies, and Sacramento Kings, where he spent the last three seasons.

The Chronicle reports Turner will run the Rockets defense, filling the role of Jeff Bzdelik, who was let go May 18.

D'Antoni and Turner have never worked together, though Turner did interview to replace D'Antoni when he left Phoenix in 2008. He has also reportedly had head coach interviews with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Portland Trail Blazers, Philadelphia 76ers, Chicago Bulls, and Los Angeles Clippers in the past.

After filling Bzdelik's chair, the Rockets still have at least two openings on their coaching staff with the departures of Roy Rogers and Mitch Vanya, and on Wednesday, G League head coach Joseph Blair agreed to join the Philadelphia 76ers.
