HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610)- With the help of a big, early lead, the Rockets coasted to their ninth straight win, beating the Charlotte Hornets 118-106 Monday night at Toyota Center.

Charlotte scored the game's first five points, but Eric Gordon's 3-pointer capped an 8-0 Rockets run, giving them their first lead of the night. It would be the last lead change of the night. Charlotte got within a point twice, but a 14-2 burst put the Rockets up 13, and despite James Harden shooting 1-of-9 in the quarter, the Rockets led 38-19 after 12 minutes.

Things didn't get any better for Charlotte in the second quarter as the Rockets built their lead up to 29 points in taking a 71-44 lead into halftime, but the Hornets did manage to climb back into the game after the break.

The Hornets scored the first six points of the second half, but the Rockets increased their lead to 28 when Harden made a pair of free throws with 4:13 left in the quarter, though the Hornets scored the game's next 15 points, and the Rockets lead was down to 93-80 after three quarters, and it never fell below double-digits in the fourth.

Even though he shot just 7-of-21 from the field, Harden led the Rockets with 28 points, thanks to 11-of-12 shooting from the free throw line. Gordon added 22 points, while Clint Capela chipped in 19 points and 15 rebounds.

After missing the Rockets previous five games with hip and adductor injuries, Kenneth Faried 16 points and nine rebounds off the bench as the Rockets improve to 42-25 on the season.

Kemba Walker's 40 points led Charlotte. He shot 14-of-20 from the field and made all six of his 3-point attempts, but the Hornets fall to 30-37.

Up next for the Rockets will be a battle against the Golden State Warriors Wednesday night as Toyota Center, as the Rockets go for the regular season sweep of the defending NBA champs.
