Rockets Sign Austin Rivers

With Chris Paul out, Rockets add guard depth

HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610)- In a statement released Monday morning, Rockets general manager Daryl Morey announced the team signed guard Austin Rivers.

Rivers, 26, became a free agent last week when he was waived by the Phoenix Suns following a trade from the Washington Wizards. With Washington this season, Rivers played in 29 minutes, averaging 7.2 points in 23.6 minutes. The Rockets signed the guard to a one-year deal that is fully guaranteed.

The Rockets need for Rivers arose Thursday when Chris Paul suffered a grade-2 strain of his left hamstring in a 101-99 loss to the Miami Heat. Rivers was Paul's backup for three seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers, where Rivers' father, Doc, is the head coach. The two guards reportedly had a poor relationship, but the Chronicle reported Sunday that Paul voiced no objections to Rivers' addition.

Rivers practiced with the Rockets Monday and will be available when the team hosts the Oklahoma City Thunday Christmas Day.
