Simone Biles Named Athlete Of The Year At Houston Sports Awards

Gymnast beats out James Harden, Alex Bregman, and DeAndre Hopkins

HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610)- After taking home four gold medals at the 2018 Gymnastics World Championships. Simone Biles was named Houston Athlete of the Year at the second annual Houston Sports Awards Presented by Insperity at the Hilton Americas.

Biles beat out James Harden, Alex Bregman, and DeAndre Hopkins for the award that was won by Hopkins at last year's event.

Biles, 21, took home gold for the team event, all around event, vault, and floor exercise, while winning silver for uneven bars, and bronze for balance beam in Dhoa Qatar last fall. 

Other winners included Houston quarterback D'Eriq King for College Athlete of the Year, and Rockets head coach Mike D'Antoni for Coach of the Year.

D'Antoni wasn't the member of the Rockets honored. Owner Tilman Fertitta was named Executive of the Year, and the Western Conference Finals won the award for Event of the Year.

J.J. Watt won Sportsman of the Year and presented the award to the girls from Santa Fe High School who started Hearts United.

Joe Texan Banowsky won Fan of the Year, which his wife and mother accepted on his behalf after his passing in November.

Along with the award winners, Dan Pastorini, George Foreman, Jack Burke Jr, and A.J. Foyt were inducted into the Houston Sports Hall of Fame, joining inaugural inductees Earl Campbell, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Nolan Ryan.
