HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610) -- Cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III is being claimed off waivers by the Houston Texans after he was released earlier in the week by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Hargreaves was selected by the Bucs with 11th overall pick in the 2016. He played college football at Florida.

Hargreaves played in eight games for the Bucs this season, but never more than 45 percent of the snaps. He has one interception on the season and two for his career.

A shoulder injury ended his 2018 season prematurely. He hasn't played in all 16 games since his rookie season, when he had his only other interception. He played in just nine games for the Bucs in 2017, misisng time with a hamstring injury.

Bucs general manager Jason Licht said in a statement published by ESPN that it was a difficult decision to waive Hargreaves, "but I felt it was in the best interest of our team to part ways with Vernon at this time and allow him to explore other opportunities. We are disappointed that it did not work out here for Vernon and we wish him continued success moving forward."

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the Texans were the only team to put in a waiver claim for the former first-round pick.

The Texans released cornerback Briean Boddy-Calhoun from the active roster to make room for Hargreaves.

Houston has been banged up in the secondary for much of the season, with starting corners Bradley Roby and Johnathan Joseph, and rookie Lonnie Johnson Jr. all missing some time due to injuries.

The Texans traded for cornerback Gareon Conley from the Oakland Raiders a few weeks ago, just days before they were set to play the Raiders at NRG Stadium.
