Brian Gaine: Texans Not Entirely Focused On Need In Coming Draft

Texans GM Brian Gaine has more focus on the process and getting the draft board right

Houston (SPORTSRADIO 610) - Texans General Manager Brian Gaine addressed the media Thursday and discussed Jadeveon Clowney's contract negotiations, free agency, and most importantly the strategy in the coming NFL Draft. While the Texans have needs in the secondary and offensive line, Gaine spoke to the whether or not those spots would be directly addressed in the early rounds of the draft. For Brian, it's more about how their board works out.

"We’re always going to do what we can to improve the team at any position. We’re focused more – not so much on need in the draft process, but we’re focused on the actual process. Get the board right, rank it correctly and really let the board speak for itself. Our focus is more about our preparation and the process of how we arrive to those decisions. So, those conversations have already happened and are still happening to this date as it relates to how the board will be finished, but the board will speak for itself and the board will speak to us about the next best player to pick. If it happens to be a position of need or perceived need and it happens to be the next best player on the board, those are the best selections," Gaine said.

There is even a possibility that the Texans would trade out of the first round, according to Brian.

"I think if there’s value on the board and that player is dropping and you had a high value on him and a high grade and you trust your process and that player’s starting to slide down the board, perhaps that’s worth a conversation, maybe if you had to go up and get him. I think conservatively speaking, I would always lend more toward accumulating more picks – more at-bats, more volume, more opportunities to take more players," Gaine said.

The focus of free agency was more directed towards needs for the Texans.

"We were able to address some situations in free agency, and free agency’s certainly more of a needs-driven environment. We felt like we were able to add some pieces to the puzzle here to help us come into this draft and to be in position to take the next best player. So, we’re pleased with some of the things we did in free agency and now we’re positioned here in the draft," Brian said.

Another topic of this offseason has been contract negotiations with Jadeveon Clowney. Nothing has been resolved yet, however there are plans to finish a deal. There is still reason to believe that Clowney will be with the Texans for the foreseeable future.

"That’s the spirit of the franchise tag. There’s a reason why we did that – with every hope and intention of continuing to work on that. That’s a negotiation. It’s a process. It has to be a deal that makes sense for both sides – for the player, for the organization as it relates to short-term and long-term. So, that’s still the plan," Gaine said.
