(SportsRadio 610) -- Cornerback Vernon Hargreaves is returning to the Texans after agreeing to a one-year contract with the team, according to multiple reports.

The Texans released Hargreaves last month, instead of picking up his $9.594 million fifth-year option. Hargreaves, a former 11th overall pick out of Florida in 2016, was claimed off waivers by the Texans after he was released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

He finished with 21 tackles, one for a loss and two passes defensed for the Texans in the regular season.

Just a few days ago, the Texans were thin at cornerback with Johnathan Joseph agreeing to test free agency and no agreed upon deal with top corner Bradley Roby.

Since then, the Texans have agree to sign Roby to a three-year, $36 million contract and they are bringing back Hargreaves. .

The Texans' pass defense will need to improve under first-year defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver. It gave up the fourth-most yards per game in the 2019 regular season, and the second-most among the 12 playoff teams.

After the season ended, Bill O'Brien described Hargreaves as a hard worker who put in time to learn the Texans' system mid-season.

"I don't think that's easy to be able to come in, in the middle of a season, and really later than that, and play that nickel position is not easy," O'Brien said in January. "So, I give a lot of credit to Vernon. There's a lot of things that he's going to work hard to improve upon. We're going to help them with that, but I think Vernon stepped into a tough situation and really made the best of it."
