Houston (SPORTSRADIO 610) - Astros starter Justin Verlander got roughed up early and often by the Mariners Thursday night at Minute Maid Park. Seattle led off the game with a reverse cycle, a home run, triple, double and single, before Verlander could record an out. His night would end earlier than expected after being ejected for arguing a balk call in the second inning, and the damage by the Mariners was too much for the Astros to overcome as they fell by a final score of 8-6.

"That puts you on your heels a little bit. He settled in for the bottom half of the order, but when it rolled over again those same guys did a lot of damage again," Astros Manager A.J. Hinch said. "Maybe an off night."

Justin allowed 6 earned runs on 7 hits in his 2 inning outing. There were 3 home runs, 2 doubles, a triple and a single. It was his shortest outing since June 4, 2017 against the White Sox where he also went just 2 innings.

"They put some good swings on some pitches and I didn't make some good pitches. Kind of a combination of things," Verlander said. "I didn't even know I was ejected to be honest with you. I probably would've gotten a better explanation of what happened had I known I was ejected."

In his first 25 starts with the Astros, he has a 1.60 earned run average and allowed 14 home runs. However, in the last 10 starts he has a 4.03 ERA and also 14 home runs allowed. Justin also has just two wins in those ten outings.

From the Houston lineup, Tony Kemp produced going 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI single. Alex Bregman singled to leadoff the game to continue his strong season. He has reached base safely in 69 of 71 games since May 15.
