Eight Other Regulars Didn't Play

HOUSTON (SPORTSRADIO 610) – Deshaun Watson took five snaps in the Texans’ preseason opener, 10 months after tearing his ACL.

It was a modest five-play drive for 33 yards, but it was significant, Watson is officially back.  The Texans ran the ball four times on the drive, Watson completed his only pass attempt to Bruce Ellington for four yards, but just stepping on the field was a benchmark for the Texans quarterback.

Watson played five more plays than several of his teammates, both DeAndre Hopkins and Will Fuller were held out of the first preseason game for precautionary reasons.

J.J. Watt as expected didn’t play, and there’s a decent chance he won’t play in any of the preseason games as he comes off his tibial plateau fracture.

Jadeveon Clowney is still ramping up to full football activities and didn’t participate, but was dressed on the sidelines with his teammates.

Another omission on the defensive side of the ball was Whitney Mercilus, who has missed the last couple of practice for the Texans.  Since teams aren’t required to submit an injury report during the preseason, it’s not clear if or what Mercilus is dealing with.

Bernardrick McKinney, Tyrann Mathieu and D.J. Reader, who don’t have much to prove at this point in their NFL career, were also given the night off and didn’t see the field.
