HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610) -- Clint Capela bounced back from a two-game absence with a concussion to put up 22 points and 20 rebounds in the Rockets win against the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday night.

It was Capela’s fourth straight game with at least 20 rebounds. The last player to do that for the Rockets was Elvin Hayes in 1971.

Head coach Mike D’Antoni said earlier in the year Capela was working his way into shape. Capela appears to have done that, running the floor and cutting to the rim for easy buckets from James Harden and Russell Westbrook lob passes.

“He probably didn’t have his legs early and now he’s got them and he’s playing. He’s really playing,” D’Antoni said after Monday’s win, the Rockets’ eighth straight.

The Rockets' focus this season has been improving on rebounding and defense. Capela plays a critical role, as the best rebounder and rim protector on the team.

“He had a lot of energy,” Harden said after Capela’s 22-and-20 performance. “He came in and just ran the floor very well. Played, taking to the rim, rebounding the basketball at a high level, things that he’s capable of doing.”

These are Capela’s points and rebounds in the last six games in which he’s played (all of them Rocket wins):

  • 22 points, 20 rebounds against the Blazers
  • 12 points and 20 rebounds against the Clippers
  • 11 points and 20 rebounds against the Pelicans
  • 16 points and 20 rebounds against the Bulls
  • 19 points and 16 rebounds against Warriors

Hayes had front row seats to Capela tying his team record for most consecutive 20-point games.

Capela said he spoke with Hayes briefly after the game and was congratulated by the Houston legend.

“Hopefully I can keep it going since I feel great,” Capela said. “I was really excited to be back for the game tonight.”
