Landry Locker: The Texans need to sign Ndamukong Suh

Would bring a level of nasty the Texans defense

The Texans biggest needs this offseason are well-documented, offensive line and cornerback.  It’s inevitable Brian Gaine will address these flaws as free agency begins in less than three weeks, but there are other ways this football team can be improved.

In 2018 the Texans defense was third in the NFL against the run, but 28th against the pass in large part because of poor cornerback personnel, but also because of the inability to pressure opposing quarterbacks consistently.

Here’s something nobody’s talking about (cue it up, Figgy Fig):

The Texans need to sign free agent defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.

The 2018 Texans defense had 43 sacks, which isn’t bad, but 25 of those sacks came from two players, J.J. Watt (16) and J.D. Clowney (9).

Suh would bring a level of nasty the Texans defense needs at a decent price (right now SpotTrac estimates Suh’s yearly salary at less than $10 million, which would give Gaine more than enough money to improve the roster in places of need) and most importantly, an interior defensive lineman that can get after the quarterback.

Seth Payne of Mad Radio (6-10am on SportsRadio 610) said last week that faster players on the defensive interior could lead to more Texans sacks because when guys rushing from the outside (Watt, Clowney, Mercilus) make inside moves on opposing offensive linemen you need to have faster interior linemen who can replace containment and get after the opposing quarterback to complete the sack.

Interior linemen D.J. Reader, Brandon Dunn and Christian Covington did a lot of good things for the Texans in 2018 especially against the run, but speed isn’t their best asset. Suh might not be what he once was, but when Watt or Clowney go inside he can still get up-field and after the quarterback.

Yes, Suh only had 4.5 sacks last year for the Rams, but it was also the first year he had ever been in a 3-4 scheme. He also played very well in the playoffs and had 5 QB hits and 1.5 sacks.

I’m giddy about the possibility of Watt, Clowney and Suh chasing quarterbacks for the Texans in 2019. Make it happen, Mr. Gaine.
