In his 41 seasons as a coach in the NFL, current LA Rams’ defensive coordinator Wade Phillips has been on the opposite sideline from Bill Belichick on 33 occasions during Bill Belichick’s 43 years as an NFL coach. That total includes both the regular season and the playoffs. Super Bowl LIII will mark their 34th overall meeting.

Regardless of title, and interestingly enough, Belichick only holds a narrow 17-16 advantage over the Son of Bum. Their first meeting took place on September 20, 1981, when Phillips was the defensive coordinator for his father Bum’s team, the New Orleans Saints, while Belichick was serving as the linebackers coach for Bill Parcell’s New York Giants. Belichick’s team prevailed, 20-7, as Phil Simms threw for 324 yards and one touchdown to somebody named Gary Shirk.

After Phillips evened the score 3 years later when the Saints won in New Jersey, Belichick went on a roll, winning their next 5 head-to-head meetings.

Between 1988 and 1997, Phillips’ career took him to Philadelphia, Denver, and Buffalo, a period in which he dominated the matchups with Belichick, winning 11 of 12 during a time in which Belichick worked for the Giants, Browns, Patriots, and Jets. Since then, Belichick has prevailed in 9 of 14 head-to-head matchups.

These 2 iconic coaches have met only 5 times as opposing head coaches, beginning on November 7, 1993, when Phillips’ Broncos defeated Belichick's Browns, 29-14; a game in which John Elway outdueled Bernie Kosar. In their 5 career meetings as head coaches, Phillips holds a 3-2 advantage.

Each man has held a variety of coaching positions throughout their respective NFL careers. In Super Bowl LIII, the matchup will pit head coach Bill Belichick against defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. That dynamic has played out on 8 occasions with each coach emerging victorious 4 times.

Not until the 27th of their 33 matchups did Phillips and Belichick meet in the post-season. On January 14, 2007, Belichick’s Patriots defeated Phillips’ Broncos in the Divisional Round of the AFC playoffs, 24-21, as the Charger’s offense turned the ball over 4 times. Since then, they’ve split 2 subsequent meetings in the playoffs, with Belichick eliminating the Texans in 2013 and Phillips avenging that loss with an AFC Championship Game victory in 2016 that sent the Broncos to the Super Bowl. Since Belichick became the Patriots' head coach in 2000, he's faced Phillips on 10 occasions, owning just a 6-4 advantage.

On February 3rd, Phillips will try to make it 2 in a row over Belichick in the playoffs. Amazingly, that would even the overall score between the 2 at 17-17 and their playoff rivalry at 4-4.
